Why does student voice matter?

We are often asked why it is important to make sure student’s voices are heard, and what role student leadership plays in education.

In the GFM, we believe that student voice and leadership benefits all. The community strengthens and grows when we listen, speak and problem solve together.

Students are able to develop a wider range of teamwork and leadership skills in a fun and creative way which also exemplifies our Gosport Futures skills. They are engaged in decision making, seek inventive solutions and connect with their peers and members of staff.

We want GFM students to feel empowered and feel a strong sense of belonging. We know if they feel valued, they know and see how their contributions make a difference. Development is enhanced when young people are asked and the community listens. The experiences and ideas of young people are abundant, we want to make sure student’s voices are heard and leadership opportunities are built into everything we do.

Here is a taster of some of the student voice and leadership activities in GFM schools:

  • Clubs and societies leaders
  • Trips and Visits organisers
  • DofE
  • Junior Executive
  • Junior leadership teams
  • Prefects
  • Young Leaders
  • Peer mentors, peer readers.
