Growing new skills – school garden helps break down barriers to learning

Students have harvested their first crop in the school garden at Brune Park!

Students Brogan and Mack have grown an impressive bunch of radishes and Erica and made a frame to support peas that were planted in April.

Chantelle and Mia have planted a beautiful cut flower bed to grow flowers to take home before the end of term.

The garden is used by a variety of students across different year groups. The project has supported alternative ways to support young people to thrive and develop skills beyond the classroom.

Students have been spending time each week learning to care for the plants and chickens.

Assistant Headteacher, Alice Harlan, said: “The benefits of gardening to mental health and wellbeing are widely recognised and working in the walled garden is a great opportunity for our young people – I am hoping that I may get a bunch of sweet peas and cosmos for my desk!”
